(The official guide from the HQ)

2009 BURNING MAN SURVIVAL GUIDE

The Survival Guide for Burning Man 2009 is now available online, and the printed version is making its way to your physical mailbox if you bought a ticket for this year's event.

Whether you're a first time Burner, or a vet, the Survival Guide is mandatory reading for every participant (guess that's why we named it Survival Guide).  And while we hate to use the word "mandatory," darn if it doesn't sound really urgent and all. And it is.

We change and update the content every year, and there's important information that actually can make or break your Burning Man experience.  So please, do read it, and make sure all your campmates do too.  Here ... it's right here:

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival

You can read it online, or download a PDF (which is dern pretty, we gotta say).

NEW/HIGHLIGHTED stuff for 2009 includes:

• What to expect at the Gate
• Giving feedback on law enforcement
• The city plan has changed!
• No early arrivals
• Exodus etiquette - what to expect
• Lumber recycling on the playa - don't burn good wood!
• Trash, recycling & grey water updates
• Storm emergency instructions
• RV servicing and fees
• Sound on Mutant Vehicles
• Revised Shuttle ticket price
• No public showers and pools

**\<>/**\<>/*Local FORCAST*\<>/**\<>/**

Essentially ~ it’s HOT, it’s COLD, very high WINDS & for the Love of DUST we trust!

#1 - SHADE ~ Domes, hurts, built structures...

(the green in me would like to chat about avoiding PVC & other earth unfriendly materials.  + How to make stuff so that you can use it again next year and so on...

·         (~T~) my favorite; camo netting; easy, works great, strong, and looks cool ~

·         (Adam) 10X10X10 triangles that will be attached the top sections of the pentagon shaped dome.  http://www.strombergschickens.com/starplate_building_system/starplate_index.php

Shelter ~

·         The Amazing Hexayurt  http://hexayurt.com/

It's f***in HOT ~ misters, water guns, umbrellas/parasols, hats, lil’ personal fans (nice for hot tent circulation) & dipping scarves in icy (clean) cooler water to wear around me neck.

*****STAY WELL HYDRATED!!!  Drink more water than you think you can.  *****

It's f***in COLD ~ your warmest coat, FUR, lots of sox, gloves, hats, warm bedding.  (speaking of bedding, a big extra sheet to cover your bed when you’re not in it, should dust creep into your cozy sleepy space, peel back the dust layer before pass-out!)

  • “hand-warmers” seem like a waste, yes?

The gale force winds ~

·         Keep in mind, *****Everything***** has the potential to blow away, rip & break...  Bring stuff that is super sturdy! - think about "how do I deal when the storms blows in & F's up my sheet!"

Yes, masks are are dusty MUST - I like to cover mine &/or use bandana's (xtra on hand) for the unforseen.

**\<>/**\<>/*Good Stuff yo*\<>/**\<>/**

Other good misc essentials ~

  • Place your car keys in one spot where you will remember

·         Please bring “work” gloves to help build & clean.

·         Quality zip lock bags for your what-evers.  The cheep ones will break, been there…

·         Duck tape, sharpies, zip ties, goggles, dust masks &/or w/scarf ...yah yahh yahhh –

o        Oh, if your handy wipes dry out + Water, duh!  (my Mom taught me that one!)

·         Water-sport gear makes great dust-protection gear (for Camera…)

·         If you put your name of your stuff, it can find its’ way back to you!

·         Attaching items to your body, your bike, your tent; tie, hook it...  like lighters on a rope, tastes better than soap!  Easy to find, harder to loose, also softer on late night brain, yah!

·         If you smoke; ash tins!!!!  I like to paint metal mint boxes & coffee cans w/ lid (cut a 1” hole in top for easy drop in.  (I plan to paint a few bigger ones for the bar/dome…)(~T~)  always good to have many.  Especially, one to carry around w/ you!

·         Pack then, UN-pack!  Minimize your load.  You really don't need all that stuff, do you!?

·         Re/de-packaging food, batteries, everything.  Less trash, easier to deal with & hey, find!

·         Be organized in that, think about your habits, make stuff easy to find; next to sleep space (ear plugs, face wipes, condoms, next to cooler (wine opener, dishes, clean towel), I like having a ‘toy’ box outside my tent so as not to have to climb in/out at every whim.

·         Reusable Enviro. safe water bottles

·         Cough drops as candy for dry/sore playa throat.  Candy with a twist.  I mix mild & strong ones.  Sometimes you want a little, sometimes you need more.

·         non breakable BIG dressing mirrors! They are very “fun-house” but, broken glass sucks!

·         Port-o-potty Tote; for the times so often, when there may be NO tp.  Pack a Tote w/, single-ply TP, handy wipes, hand sanitizer, a flash light... (-Miss Shonda)

·         Night time “See Me!” lighting on your body.  Not always necessary but a damn good idea, if it’s a small moon, it’s dark…! + then, we can see you in the distance, yeah there you are! (see lighting Sec.)

For the Ladies ~

·         panty liners! (great when nature pee-ing, throw away, all clean ;)~

·         Pee-funnels *so nice to have on cold nights when you are not leaving your tent but, have to peeeee!  Any large funnel will accommodate the make-shift into a large water bottle (save cap to close for no-spill) *oval shaped funnels work best.  No need to get fancy, I found one for $1 at the drug store.

Boys too! ~ wide mouth water jug...

**\<>/**

  • Likes ~ Blow-horns, L-wire, chocolate (even if it melts), stuff that is attached to stuff so I can always find it’ carabineers, flash lights in the right spot…
  • Dislikes ~ candles (too windy), anything wicker (it dries out/falls apart), feathers, beads (stuff that's too fragile will be moop), cheap toys/trinkets, in a pinch fine but, glow sticks don't last long enough= trash, chocolate (only because it melts ;(

Playa gifts are your choice, express yourself.
    Hugs are purrrfect!

**\<>/**\<>/*RUBISH - Recycling - BURN Stuff*\<>/**\<>/**

TRASH ~
the least amount of fowl fungi ripping bags you/we tote out the better!!!  It really is the worst part of packing out!  Super sturdy trash bags ONLY.  Don't skimp, they will break, ick!  PLEASE do not dump your trash just wherever.  Little towns can't handle all our waste.

http://www.burningman.com/environment/resources/trash_tips.html

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/travel_info/reno/reno_Dumps.html

·         Recycling on the Playa - cans cans cans; Center Camp does have recycling for *regular* aluminum cans.  They ONLY take the basic ones.  Buy drinks in those cans only, as much as possible.  I will try to bring out a shopping basket on wheels again.  That made it super easy to bring the load to Center.  Other baskets, rolley collectors are super encouraged.  Then we take turns carting them over.  Oh, FYI sometimes they stop collecting later in the week, they get full.

o        Seek out recycling & salvage centers along your route home. Here are 2 links:
www.oldhouses.com.au/docs/directories/us/us_salvage.htm
www.earth911.org/master.asp - enter zip code to find nearest location.

·         Recycling in Reno -   "supermarket on Keystone just south of the 80 - all of our recyclables (including plastic, etc) and they let us dump our trash in their giant dumpster, too." (xoxo, Deron & Su)

·         Burnables - Burn platforms rock!  & it's super fun catapulting stuff into the giant flames.  Have a big box or I like to giant leaf bags (hardware store) to collect All paper, boxes, wood (non toxic)  Even when by the end of the week when trash get way unorganized, it's still worth it to put those gloves on, hold your breath and get those bit into their rightful place.

***DO NOT BURN ANYTHING TOXIC** Burning synthetics is a serious health risk. Do not burn painted wood, plywood, particle, composite board, pressure treated lumber, PVC (nasty dioxins), carpets, plastic, furniture (couches, futons, etc.) or anything treated, dyed or painted. And please discourage anyone with a glass bottle from throwing it into a fire. Glass doesn't burn. It shatters!

·         Compost - That's the funk you really do not want to drive home with!!! Have a place to dry out food waste then, burn it!  I've sandwiched window screens, breathable bags, boxes to collect and dry out food debris, collect it then, burn it!  Just make sure, in the process that it will not fly away in a dust storm, ick!

·         MOOP Bags – carry a zip loc or some other spare bag to stash the random matter the you WILL be happy to scoop up, wherever you are!  It’s a tall order, to be so aware of your surroundings though, can be fun; you actually find some interesting moop / gifts to you! I once found a bag of…;)~  Every little bit counts BIG Time!  I attach a zip-loc in my bicycle basket. – Yah know, we’re rubbish making people-oids, we just cannot leave it there!

·         A magnet helps to find metal.

·         “Clean As You Go and Grid Your Camp at the End!   Don’t wait until the end of the week to pick stuff up. Clean as you go. This will help you from getting overwhelmed by the mess and help keep MOOP from blowing out of reach.  Then, at the end of our event, pack-up and load everything (including all trash) into your vehicles, and do a line sweep for every last bit of MOOP. Give everyone a Ziploc bag, line them up along one edge of camp, look down and slowly walk to the other side. Make it fun! Cover your entire area looking for those last bits of MOOP: every twist tie, cigarette butt, food scrap, carpet fiber, match, nut shell, staple, scrap of plastic …everything. Start taking down your camp Sunday , not at the last minute when patience and energy are running low.”

·         A Buried Tent Stake Doesn’t Disappear. Instead, its hazard is magnified. Even when pounded below the surface, a stake will slowly, inevitably, emerge from the playa. Then it might be found during the Bureau of Land Management's spring inspection, producing a black mark against permit renewal; or it might not be found until it tears a tire or gashes a foot – maybe during next year’s event, maybe to a windsurfer or another group that, like us, uses the playa. A pair of vise-grips will almost always remove a stuck stake. First clamp on the vise-grips and rotate the stake back and forth, to break the playa’s grip. Then continue rotating and also pull upwards. Ask neighbors for help. As a last resort, make the stake highly visible by fastening something to it. Someone else with heftier tools will be able to get it out. for more information, go to this web site.

**\<>/**\<>/*FOOD&Drink*\<>/**\<>/**

Start drinking, uh I mean *buying* now~

start buying booze and dry food way in advance, like everytime I go to the store I just pick up another couple items off my big shopping list, and this way I have not really noticed the financial burden, and my shopping is almost done already! woohoo!   -spot

  • Beer/sodas…in **REGULAR** aluminum cans are recycle-ABLE out there in Center Camp.  They will NOT take any other types.  (I will take on this one w/ your help.  I’ll bring a shopping basket on wheels for transport ~T~)
  • If you are inclined, like me, to carry around/drink straight from the bottle, wine for me; Take the foil off!  Metallic w/ my sulfites, not good.  I actually doing this at home now, I mean, take the foil off ;)  *This falls under “Re/de-packaging” nice to do this ahead of time, less fuss/trash when you want that drink…

FOOD ~ you will not eat the amount you usually do.  Make what you do eat count! – PROTIEN & VITAMIN rich, slow perishable foods.  And make it EASY!  Then there are the few angels who love to cook on the playa, if be there, do you like wine?!

  • Re-usable EVERYTHING! – utensils, plates, cups, even cloth napkins, get fancy! = less trash.

·         Food that just needs hot water is easy!  I try to remember to heat a batch, leave in big thermo for late night eats & tea!

·         Take your VITAMINS ~ as Ben the bunny & an actual Dr. Once said "you could pretty much live on card board if you are sure to take a multi each day."  I say eat a little food each day too!

·         De-package as much as possible.  Less trash.  I like to transfer stuff into zippies.

·         Cleaning dishes; camp suds and a mesh/net bag for hang drying.  Grapefruit is great at cutting the playa slim, naturally

·         PROTEIN ~n fat, mmmmmm! Sausage, jerky, or veggie substitutes

·         dried fruit, nuts, mix (great prepackage for on the go), smart bars, granola cereal-  small “one-use” soy milk boxes no need to stay cold (I know it's not ‘green,’ pick your battles)

·         I just read that Pumpkin seeds are a great aphrodisiac – foods/juice high in zinc, protein, Vit C, weee -   Saffron acts as anti-depression & pain blocker

·         Food with moisture, your mouth will not.

Is anyone planning to bring a big BBQ grill???

Smells like Bacon –
we think "Bacon is absolutely mandatory!!! :)"

"I vow to fry bacon for Bats again and again as long as I live" - Ali
"Have you ever tried chocolate w/ bacon??  I was scared but, it's actually really good!" - T

"Pre make burritos then, freeze them.  By the time your hungry, they're ready!" - AngelOne
For that matter, anything that could be pre-made, frozen and act as an ice pack to your
cooler - then, be eaten, brilliant!

“omelets:  In large bowl I crack a grip of eggs (2 per person per omelet), bell peppers, ham or imitation crab , cheese, etc. and laddle them into plastic ziplock bags (bags) according to day, not individual serving.  Don’t boil them in the bag, it works but is bad for you.  Just use pot.” - Adam

Freezing bottles of water, use as ice packs then, drink cold water (cold w/i 2-3 days)
(fyi - use disp bottle for this, Nalgein bottles will crack when frozen but, we should not be using those anyway, yes.

I freeze everything I take, everything, lunch meat, bagels, omelets, and all the salads and meals. - Adam

Cold Italian, yumm!  A batch of pasta in a zip lock is good-easy eats.  Don't make too much, after a few days, not so savory

“Red curry chicken, Tortilla soup, gumbo, jambalaya, spagetti and meatballs,  beef stroganoff

The first 3 can be eaten with rice, precook a ton of it and put in a gallon bag.” - Adam

If you have a car top storage thingy, Dave Drach would keep canned food in there, all hot & ready to eat at the end of a hot day. – Canned spaghetti-O’s not so bad

"If anyone is interested in something really simple for a lunchtime snack - instead of bringing bread, peanut butter and jelly all separately, grab those Smuckers Uncrustables.

One of you marvelous bats suggested that to me when they saw me struggling with sandy peanut butter on a crusty piece of dried out bread, so thank you for that ;)" -Kimmers

"the best tip I could possibly give a burner is to bring 30 pieces of boneless fried chicken per person. no bowl. no mess.no cooking. always delicious. w/ a little hot sauce or on a hamburger bun.....fuh get about it.  I am not kidding      when you are tripping balls or neck deep in a "K" hole the LAST thing you need to be doing is fucking around with

propane, flames, pain in the ass dirty dishes. " - Bagley

“i can vouch for this tip! yummmm...goes quite nicely with that Argentinean wine he always      brings” – Slinkerbell

Adam is brilliant w/ cooking.  I love his idea to boil a bag of omelet.  I think he has a good coffee trick too?

Avo/cheese/hummus wraps, yum.  Tuna works too – it’s easy! ~T~

Chocolate and Port is a fantastic combination...that's all I'm saying ;)  -Kimmers

& Dry ice is kool! can be done if kept in seperate/good sealed cooler & only open occationally.

Dry ice, if you haven't done this, it's worth some study.  Basically they come in 10"X10"X2" blocks, you place them on top of your food WRAPPED IN PAPER (newpaper or brown works best).  1 block will keep your food in a small chest totally frozen for close to 3 days.  2 blocks in a big cooler.  after that you know the drill.  I buy 10 kilos for the first 3 days.  It assures nothing will spoil after reggie icing.  If you choose to use this, you must take out whatever you plan on eating close to a day before to let it thaw being that dry ice is -109 F your food will be way below 0.

  • Tennis ball for bike kick stand (keeps it from sinking into the soft playa)
  • LIGHT Your Bike or DIE– Be seen! – el wire, LED’s, try to go w/o glow sticks = waste.
  • MOOP bag attached in your Basket – highly recommended for your *stuff!*
  • Ever find a BOOP in your camp? A Bike-Out-Of-Place?
Q: What to do with a bike left in your camp that doesn't belong to anyone from your camp?
A: LEAVE IT.  It may belong to someone who plans to return to fetch it later. Sure,
move it out of your way, maybe near a street where it can be spotted by the owner.
Abandoned bikes should be left where they lay.

Costume ~ Décor ~ Toys ~ In the spirit of Burning Man, we recommend you beg, scrounge, rummage and borrow before you buy. But for those items that can't be located in a dumpster, check here in the Resources section:

  • When hanging fabric, a great way to attach ends is to first, tie a ping-pong ball into the corners of the fabric where to then have a sturdy anchor by which to then tie to structure.
  • Sharpies!!!!!  Body ART also, makes great Face makeup - Donut be affraid, it actually comes off too easily on sweaty bodies.
  • non breakable BIG dressing mirrors! They are very “fun-house” but, broken glass sucks! - can be hard to find, ANYONE?
  • Flea Markets, International Markets, garage sales…  Try those great lil Mom-n-Pops before hitting the big corporate chains stores.   Have a clothing/prop exchange party.

Sleeping/naps/hang-overs  ~  always a challenge!  Just go with it.

·        When I absolutely had to go down & could not in the heat of my dusty tent, a friends dowsed a large towel on cold water, blanketed me, I went out!  Good to also have; ear plugs, sleeping pills (very helpful!) eye masks are nice.

·        bring an extra sheet to put over your bed while you are away from your tent. If a dust storm happens while you are away, the sheet protects your bedding from the dust. Pull it off when you return from your adventure to a semi-dust free bed..

·         Hangover packs.  Much more useful than first aide, IMO.  In individual dose ziploc bags, bring along Emergen-C, L-Lysine, B-vitamins (the sublingual ones work the best), your preferred brand of analgesics, and ricola or other non-saccharine cough drops.  Depending on you intend to do out on the playa, I also recommend adding 5-HTP pills to the bag as well.  Before you pass out at night or right when you wake up cursing yourself for forgetting the night before, take everything in the baggie along with a bottle of water and then suck on the lozenge/cough drop.  The Emergen-C will dose you up with lots of good vitamins (including, duh, Vitamin C), the L-Lysine will help boost your immune system so you don't get sick, the B-vitamins will aide your body in normalizing from hangover state and will work in tandem with the analgesics to rid you of that pesky hangover, and the cough drops will get your saliva glands working so that you're ready to put something in your stomach...key for avoiding hangover stomach.  The 5-HTP will assist your brain in normalizing serotonin production and uptake.  That can help you feel better rested and have a more stabilized mood even if you didn't commit recreational trespasses the night before.

(I have recommendations for other uses for 5-HTP as well as phenylalanine supplements, but we'll best handle those conversations off list. – Renée)

·         When you first wake, before your grapefruit vodka, drink at least 24oz ++ of water.

Salvage - Take the extra effort after Burning Man to bring your extra wood and other camp building materials to re-use/salvage centers, rather than burning or taking to a dump. www.burnerswithoutborders.org/ - is planning to once again collect used, and usable, building materials at the end of the event?

TRAVEL INFORMATION & ROAD/BRIDGE CLOSURES

You DO want to get there, right?  Right.  So yeah, we have the webpage for you.  Whether you want rideshare information, driving directions from whichever point on the compass you're starting, details about how to get from Reno Tahoe International Airport to the playa, or information about Reno or Gerlach, you can find it here:

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/travel_info

Oh, and one other thing ... there are detours on I-80 in the Sierras due to road construction that could affect your driving time ... especially with Mutant Vehicles in tow.  More info:

http://www.getacross80.com/

Finally, CalTrans announced plans to close the San Francisco Bay Bridge late Thursday, September 3 through the morning of Tuesday, September 8 due to construction.  That will make for a real hellacious show, folks.  Plan accordingly.  More info:

·        http://www.burncleanproject.org     BIODIESEL BUS SHUTTLES TO AND FROM THE PLAYA.  Shuttle, picking up passengers from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and making a pit-stop to stock up on supplies at a local store before heading out to the playa.  Additionally, SF-to-BRC shuttle on Aug. 30.  And taking reservations for anyone who wants to get back to Reno from BRC after the event. $65-$75 donation

·         I love to stop at a truck stop in Reno to shower and eat before the long drive

·         Pack a separate set of clothes to change into.  So nice to have clean sox & panties!  And throw in a few toiletries for ease.  Place in a double sealed zip-lock. I stash my lil’ bag under the car seat for easy to find later.

·         You will be completely, unbelievably exhausted!  If possible, spend a night in Reno (the new trend has been some great post playa parties @ hotels in Reno) or stop at another on the-way-home site to rest.  Post playa camping is nice!

·         Please be safe, call each other in rout, we love you!

  2. a last breath about FIRE.  I have always hoped, dreamed, just about brought it myself though, have read the rules; there has to be a designated “fire watcher” for the entire length of any heat.  Unfortunately, I could not handle that responsibility UNLESS one of you are like “oh, my god, I would so man those embers with my life…!” ????
